Outstanding screenshot! I look forward to seeing your Silver Wings upgrade in FSX. Have you ever thought about converting Golden Wings to FSX.

At this stage I am only testing what can be done so until I spend a great deal more time working on this project I really can't say what will happen or even if it will happen.
I am working on both Silver Wings and Golden Wings.
Will try and keep you all upto date as best I can.
Cheers Ian

I hope this works out. Silver Wings was probably the #1 best enhancement for FS9. A similar FSX release would be equally outstanding.

Hi Bluebird,
I assume you probably would have posted any breakthroughs pertaining to your scenery project. Nonetheless, I was wondering if you have any updates you would like to share with the community.
Thanks, Walter

has the ball been dropped on this project? i've been playing around a lot with scenery lately and loved Golden Hawaii so much, i've discovered myself slowly converting my FSX Hawaii scenery back to the Golden Age. anyway, decided to go full force and do the entire island of oahu as my forays into aircraft modeling have been less than successful. so far the island terrain is in place consistent with geological survey maps from 1938, airports that did not exist at the time have been deleted, and am now mulling over texture/autogen issues. think i'll work on fish ponds/streams/lakes and getting the airfields in place, as that i do know how to do. wish there were more golden age ai planes out there!

wish there were more golden age ai planes out there! Hi Jon That's not a problem at all. You can use all of the Golden Age FS9 models plus what I've done in my own 'Golden Wings' version of FSX is take all of Bill's GW AI (aircraft and flightplans), dropped them in and then substituted the aircraft that are incompatible. I've got Lockheeds, Wacos etc galore flying around. Paul Clawson's models are especially suitable I've found.

Can I pick your brain on how you've done your personal 'Golden Wings' for FSX? I'm utterly stuck on textures, they look so modern for cities/towns, but it would look silly to turn everything into farms just to get an older look.

Sorry for delay in replying Jon. No, haven't had the time to do stuff like that - maybe sometime in the future when I'm retired or something All I've done is have a Golden Wings version of FSX in which I've installed all my vintage and golden era aircraft and put in all vintage AI in the way I described previously. You could then go on and do what Bill did and start excluding all the modern, large airports and/or replacing them with vintage versions but I just don't have the time for anything like that just now. And as I prefer flying my golden era planes away from the big cities anyway, I just keep away from them. Even so, it's amusing to visit an airport like Heathrow and see all the golden era AI parked, taxying and stuff. Imagine if as I guess would be possible you could replace the modern FSX road traffic with vintage vehicles

Hi,
I dont understand why we can't just add Bill's GW, although not intended for FSX, to a seperate version of FSX, so as not to corrupt the orginal installation and check the results. I thought that certain scenery designed for FS9 can work in FSX with mix results.
Has anyone tried experimenting with merging GW and FSX?
Sincerely, Walter

Sorry Walter, the terrain engines are totally different and the textures just won't mix as they stand. I even found that lots of Bill's AI were of old design and had to be swapped for new models that are FSX compatible (which is why I recommended the Paul Clawson models for example) although you can use his GW AI flight plans just so long as you rename the replacement aircraft to match his old ones that you are replacing.
It would be totally possible to make an FSX Golden Wings but it would almost certainly be a bigger job than when Bill did FS9 even

Bill estimated 7x the work JUST for ground textures. Removing/covering the Post War airports is a whole different ballgame. He determined that it would be impractical for him to even consider it. The changes in many of the systems made me decide that Golden Wings would be an FS9 thing forever It seems to me that Silver Wings would be possible though, but probably easier with a strong team of texture artists. The difficult part would be creation of 50's - 60's airports, i.e. retrograding JFK to Idlewild due to the changes in the scenery engine.
