I wonder if T. Claude had visited the Douglas factory to see the (then) new Dauntless. Actually, a non-perfed flap would blanket out the tail, from what I've heard. According to Russ Williams, who owns the "big" SC, it has quite an affect on airspeed, little on lift. Thanks for the nice pic, Rog!

Hi all,
This is another of your great successes Steve.
I think I would call it more of a dive brake then flaps....as it does not generate lift.
I did not repaint this one cause you made it so nice......still, may be I should have a go at it..

Hi, Leon,
Actually, a few were painted later in their lives, more in an effort to reduce maintainance (polishing) . All were delivered in polished metal with silver dope wings and empanage. One or two, today, have nice paint jobs. One or two also have been re-engined with flat sixes.

That Ryan was the first add-on I put in the sim as a new flyer and I flew the heck outta that thing in the beginning. Steve's work is outstanding in detail and flight dynamincs.
Each one is a beauty.

That's much appreciated, spad54, thank you.
Russ has offered to come down and give me and my wife a ride around the 'patch in the SC if he can get here anytime soon. There's a Ken Royce specialist (!!!) he's using here. It'll be the ride of a lifetime if it happens.

I agree, Leon! There are plenty of classic aircraft that were built with flat engines from the factory (eg Cessna 170). It would be just as silly, to me, to hack one of them by putting a radial on it. Some of the remaining SC-Ws have been upgraded to higher HP Warners. The advantage there is pressure lubrication of the top end.

Steve. thanks, I really do appreciate you sharing all this knowledge with us.
About a 170 with a radial, funny you mention it, that was my reaction when I saw this new Yak for the first time (see other thread).........it does have a far fetched 170 'à la Beaver' type of look........
Cheers,
Léon Louis
