I browse all the major flight sim forums and I have read all the various tweaks that people recommend for FSX. I have read glowing reports on how this or that tweak added 5-10 frame rates per second to FSX or how the tweak cleared up their blurries. I have tried most of these tweaks with very little results. The other day I ran across another tweak at AVSIM that was different form all that rest in that it had/has stirred up quite a controversy along the lines that if you use this tweak it could mess up your computer. The tweak concerns a line in the registry named LargeSystemCache. It seems that the default setting for this is zero but if you change it to one it is suppose to improve your frame rates and the smoothness of FSX. The downside, as I said above, is that some people say it can ruin your computer. Well I read all the posts visited various computer geek sites and even read every thing I could about it at Microsoft, so I thought what the heck I'll try it. I went to start, right clicked on my computer, clicked on properties, clicked advanced tab, clicked on performance settings , clicked on advanced and then clicked on System Cache under Memory Usage (programs was check by default).
I then rebooted my computer started up FSX and went flying.
Before this change the best frame rates I could get using medium settings was 18 FPS and usually I was below that and that was were I had my frame rates locked. With the change If found my frame rates were consistently at 18 so I locked them in at 25 and got consistent frame rates of 22-25 fps. I then them moved my scenery slider full right and saw the frame rates fall to 18-20 fps. I lock my frame rates at 20 and flew for about an hour with no apparent problems. After quitting FSX I changed from System Cache back to Programs, rebooted and I have not yet experienced any problems with my computer. I am going to try this for awhile and see how things go, also I think I will see what it does to FS9. One more thing, I plan to only use System Cache when flight simming.
(I will let you know if my computer crashes.)
