GW in FSX? Did I miss something?
Thanks - no you didn't really.
I have done with FSX the basics of what Bill got us all to do with FS9.
- Install an original copy of FSX in folder FSX
- Create a folder called GWX
- Copy contents of FSX folder into GWX folder
- Rename fsx.exe to gwx.exe in GWX folder
- Copy Bill's GW3 icon into GWX folder
- Create desktop shortcut to gwx.exe and assign Bill's icon to it
- Make a copy of fsx.cfg called gwx.cfg in the usual 'hidden' system folder (this avoids having to create all new settings for GWX)
- Delete all of the 'modern' default and add-on aircraft from GWX
- Copy Bill's GW3 AI aircraft into GWX and his AI bgl files
- Assign compatible aircraft to replace Bill's original ones that don't work for some reason (eg black windows, bad props) because with only 1 texture per plane you can't fix them
- Copy the vintage FS9 aircraft into GWX
- Move all of your golden era and vintage aircraft out of FSX and into GWX.
You then have a duplicate copy of FSX on your hard drive that is very similar to GW3. Your AI are all Wacos, Stinsons, Lockheeds but the modern airfields are still there, of course. I just keep away from them but as they all have separate scenery bgls I'm going to experiment with deleting a few.
The only problem is that the versions share a common scenery.cfg which is in the 'hidden' system folder along with fsx.cfg and gwx.cfg so if you have different sceneries installed in each sim (as I have - you don't want modern Kuala Lumpar in GWX do you
), you get error messages on start up. But they don't stop it running and you could easily overcome that by having 2 different scenery.cfg files, and you just pop the correct one in via a desktop shortcut before you start your chosen version.
You could use a similar setup if you wanted to have FSX/SP2 and FSX/SP1 together on your hard drive. I know that because originally, before I messed up the cloud shaders in my GWX and couldn't get them back again, I had FSX/SP2 and GWX/SP1 working fine. This is why I've been saying elsewhere that SP2 and SP1 are not either/or - you can have both and keep a choice as to which version you fly at any time.
I'm ging to experiment a bit with my GWX - change the colours maybe and the wording from FSX to GWX where possible. But as Bill discovered, I think that rolling it back properly and removing all modern references would become a life's work.
