I have started a new flight adventure which I am going to try and document, then share it with anyone who would like to try it (possible upload it to flightsim.com).
Here is a synopsis of the flight.
On July 2, 1966 two teenage brothers left Basking Ridge, New Jersey in their families Piper Cup PA11 (which they had spent the winter restoring) and flew to California to visit their uncle. It took them six days. The amazing thing about the flight was the Cub did not have lights, radio or navigation equipment, except for a compass. After finishing visiting with their Uncle they flew back to New Jersey. Since reading about their trip in the book “Flight of Passage” I have wanted to recreate this flight in FS9, kind of a commemorative 40th anniversary of their flight. So for the next few weeks or maybe months (depending on how much time I have to devote to the flight) I will bore you with some screenshot and descriptions.
Unlike their flight I will have a radio and transponder, airspace has changed a lot since 1966. But I will navigate the way they did with compass, watch and VFR sectionals.
I actually found a recreation of the plane the brothers flew at flightsim.com. It has a lousy VC but the 2D cockpit is not to bad.
0900 July 1, 2006 preparing to leave KSMA (Somerset). The brothers actually left from the Basking Ridge airport but it does not exist today.
Approaching the Delaware river and Pennsylvania.
There is the Pottstown power plant where I will follow the railroad tracks to Harrisburg.
Passing by Reading, PA still following the railroad tracks.
Approaching Harrisburg and the weather is getting bad.
The weather has cleared and there is Carisle airport N94 where I will have to refuel.
Carisle airport getting ready to refuel and continue the flight to Washington Co. Airport KAFJ soutwest of Pttisburgh for the the next refueling stop.
