I caught a cold, which had me grounded at Ketchikan for a while. Guess that's what I get for flying in all the snow and ice. ;D Anyway, I was feeling up to some flyign today and decided to do the next leg of the flight. This one being from Ketchikan (PAKT) to Petersburg (PAPG.) I chose to do this flight with the GPS with the VOR gauge slaved to it. The flight plan was: PAKT (Ketchikan) -> CLOYD -> KSAAN -> FIPAM -> PAWG (Wrangell) -> CIBDO -> PAPG (Petersburg.) For maximum visibility, I flew at 1500' ASL. The weather was pretty decent for this time of year, though there was some turbulence. Taking off at Ketchikan. Passing over Ketchikan. I always like to keep an eye out for lighthouses. Spotted the light of this one shining through the mist off of this little island. Passing Wrangell. Landing at Petersburg. Petersburg is a great spot to take off from and see some glaciers off to the east. The next leg will the the final leg to Juneau. By the way, the freeware Glacier Bay Ver.2 scenery by Holger Sandmann and team for FS9 is probably the most accurate rendition of the Juneau area for a simulator and I highly recommend it for the last leg. The files (it's in two parts) are glbayv2a.zip and glbayv2b.zip on Avsim. If anyone chooses to use this scenery, don't forget after installing it, to turn on frozen rivers and lakes in the setup program.

Nice cold (no pun intended) wintry looking scenery, Kevin!
I've been meaning to get Holger Sandmann's Glacier Bay package(s) for some time now, but have often wondered how it is on framerates and what it does to other add-on scenery - trees, water, etc. Does it replace other scenery bits & pieces entirely or just within the Alaska/Glacier Bay area that it's meant for?
Now for some hot chocolate! ;D

There is no switching of universal textures as far as I know. The addon pretty does the same thing for the northern part of the Panhandle that Holger Sandmann's Tongass Fjords does for the middle and Misty Fjords does for the southern part. Glacier Bay has it's own setup program the configures it to work with other addons such as UT and Freight Dogs. By the way, just to clarify it, I wanted to mention that the pictures above are in Xplane 8 and are not the Glacier Bay Ver.2 scenery. As I have been doing this flight in Xplane using Tom 'Howdy' Curtis' 'Final Frontier,' 'Winter World' and 'Inside Passage' which are also wonderful sceneries (though payware) for virtual bush pilots.

Thanks, Kevin. That's what I figured (Xplane), but good to know that Glacier Bay doesn't replace/switch all other universal textures.

I started this flight last night in a 1922 Fairey Flycatcher and very quickly turned about and landed again at Ketchikan. My extremities were frozen and there was two feet of snow in the cockpit and when I took my goggles off, my eyebrows came with them. I'll try again ...... when either the snow stops or summer returns, whichever comes first. Bruce

Great shots Kevin, it's really beginning to look like it's getting a bit chilly up in the North Sahara. OK Bruce, you've convinced me to break out my one piece woolies and snowmobile suit for any open cockpit adventures! No balaclava though, they always take my lips with them when they come off. ;D Rgds: Jeff

Bruce LOL - that's funny - now what would make you do that (open cockpit) in the dead of winter, Bruce? . . . must of been the ginger or combination thereof! - now what would make you do that (open cockpit) in the dead of winter, Bruce?... I don't know, Dan. Death wish, mayhap? I'd actually just downloaded the Flycatcher (honestly, the Poms had odd names for some of their aircraft ) and thought I'd give it a whirl, when I saw that Kevin had uploaded the info on Leg 8...........and the rest is history! Well, after sitting on the ground for a day I finally took off about midday today, trading in the 1920's British fighter for a 1940's model, manufactured by Westland. Considerably drier and warmer than the Flycatcher, and certainly faster. A check with the met. office came up with limited visibility, low cloud but, thankfully, no snow-storms, so I prepped the Whirlwind, fired up the twin Peregrines and blasted out of Ketchikan for that other place. Here's the flightplan. A little different to yours, Kevin, because FS9 doesn't see those other locations... The following shots were taken en-route. (This is a lovely model of the Whirlwind, too. I have the engines aliased to the P-38 Allison's). Ready for landing, coming down through the light cloud/fog layer and then lining up for landing. Speed brakes out.... Parked next to the windsock....there are no other facilities in the FS9 version of this airstrip. Bruce

Nice pictures. Looks like you had a better flight this time. I didn't realize those intersections weren't available in FS9, but looks like you got the flight plan pretty similar in FS9.

I had a small window of opportunity to do the last leg of this flight today, but missed it due to technical difficulties with XPlane. It was the only time I can remember having problems with Xplane. In the end it turned out to not have been Xplane's fault, but rather OS settings.
I guess I write this one down as failed to takeoff due to aircraft problems. ;D
