Mikko Malinemi's Maule is one of the most accurate models out there.
(Even better than some payware ones,at least to me)

It would be hard to pick a best, there are so many but this is my personal favorite: Piper PA22 Tri-Pacer File Description: The Tri-Pacer is a remarkable aircraft with performance that matches or exceeds that of its contemporary all metal Cessna 172. It is a full seven feet shorter in length then a 172 and takes off in a shorter distance with a higher cruise speed. The Tri-Pacer wins over its pilots with its performance and it is a delight to fly an aircraft that can get airborne fully loaded in 1,220 feet and land over a 50 foot barrier in 1,280 feet. It stalls at 48 mph and best rate of climb is at 84 mph when it can get 620 feet per minute. At 7,000 and 75% power it will true out at 132 mph and its service ceiling is 15,000. Today it remains popular as a classic aircraft. On the assumption that you're not talking antiques with round engine, my favorite for just putting around is Bill Lyons' Luscombe. If you have to get somewhere reasonably fast (again behind flat engines), Bill Lyons' Apache is my choice. But don't look too hard for me in those, as I spend most of my time with the above mentioned Spartan or the Corish/Halpin Taperwings.

WOW..... I must have killed half my brain cells trying to figure this one out. Hmm... let's see.... there's Bill Lyons..... Master Milton..... The LIC folks... Airhead's Deke.... Wonderful Wozza's stuff.......... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH............ Make it stop, Make it stop!!!!!!! (smile)
Ya know..... this question is just like when you get that tune in your head you just can't get rid of.... (smile) ..... and of course that always happens about 5 minutes before you head off to bed.
Your an evil person Jakemaster...(smile..... just kidding of course....... good question indeed)
P.S. I almost forgot the Zlin 43.... another WONDERFUL freeware aircraft ahead of it's time.
Whew.... okay.... I'm through for now.

Its an impossible though interesting question. I have and occasionally fly everything that has been mentioned and more besides. I don't think I could pick a definitive best. I always seem to drift back to Bill's J-3 (made originally for FS2002) or the above mentioned Tri-Pacer. Of course I also love Milton's Howard and Bill's Goose and Tom Wood's Staggerwing and... and... and... The list is endless and is always headlined by what I'm flying at the moment

Yep, the same happen to me Tom, it's difficult to say wich is the best one. There's a plane for every need: it's all about the "destination"...if it's a lake or a small strip you'll not want to fly the H500!
Now I realize I didn't considered the planes I like the most, though. For example, the H500 and the Tripacer.
Ther best plane may be the one that takes you there...

What I meant when I asked the best, isnt really like what the best is, but what your favorites are. And also, I meant modernish, but thats okay.
I didnt see it mentioned above, and I didnt say it myself, but any Long Island Classics aircraft is definately top of the ladder on freeware. Im in love with the scout especially.

I am lucky enough to know many designers; freeware and pay...and that's why I refrain from answering such questions. What is 'good' is usually in the eye of the beholder, so do like the rest of us do and try stuff; get a feel for what you like and follow the authors. Read forums; see what reviews take your fancy. Often a favorite plane isn't the newest or the most complex.
I still browse the major download sites every evening and try stuff.
