I want to be able to run steam on the Feather River route, so acquired two WP steamers....a Consolidation and a Pacific. However, as they are about six year's old, their cabs are aliased to the Flying Scotsman and the sounds leave much to be desired. So I'm currently doing some changes ..... aliasing the cabs to the Trains Artisan Empire State Express and the sounds to a new pack for the Big Boy/Challenger types. Whilst doing this stuff I decided to also swap the default Big Boy cab for the TA item, as it was far nicer. Anyway....I took some screen-shots of the Big Boy but only saved one...of the exterior! so I'll have to go back in and do the cab. Here's the Big boy running the MLT Cascade route on a cold and dark winter's morning. The fireman has the heat and water just spot-on and the engineer has the throttle/reverser set perfectly....notice the white exhaust. Bruce

Beautiful shot, Bruce!! One of those few screenshots that actually, without any explanation - portrays what it is! Once you find the right sound package, can you let us know what it is. There are a number of them at Train-sim for the Challenger types - forget what I used when I drove it up awhile back - that was when anything sounded great! Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

Dan, The file name is hrbbsndu.zip. This is the info relating to it:- MSTS Updated Sounds used by the HR series of NALW big boy, challenger and FEF steam locomotive photo repaints. Original sounds reworked mostly to improve the articulated chuff effect but challenger and FEF whistles have also been replaced along with other refinements. Requires HRBIGBOY.zip. By Hugh Reilly. Very well worth it. I am also using it for the Consolidation and Pacific. May not be 100% appropriate, as they are not articulated, but the sounds are very good....."solid", if you know what I mean. Here is the cab from the ESE that I am also using.......... You are probably aware of the Keypad '%5' view that brings up - usually - the view from a caboose if one is attached at the end of a train. In some passenger consists it has been allocated to a view from the observation car, for example. However, sometimes a clever author will give us something a little different, and in the rolling-stock that comes with Feather River is "hobo-cam". From the freight car....... Exterior view........... Neat! Bruce

Those are the exact sounds I'm using. They are very good - accurate or not, they illustrate loud and clear the power of those big locomotives - to me anyway! That is a beautiful cab!! Seems the only way I'm going to get it is to buy Trains Artisan's 'American Classics' package with the ESE in it. I was hoping to get a version with their Club T/A membership trains, but after donating to the Southeastern Railroad Museum and notifying TA of it, as well as a couple of emails relating to the same - I've heard absolutely nothing from them - seems, according to a couple of forums, they have long gone away, died off, or lost interest in their website and customer service. So, I'll have to find the package somewhere, since that cab is one of the best I've seen. I did not know about the keypad %5 view - looks great - I'll have to give it a try. I've got to get Feather River as well, but that's a ways off - love that Hobo view!! Probably get MLT's Cascade first. I'm trying a couple of freeware routes (Rollins Pass) as we speak and right now its giving me fits. Used RouteRiter and it seems the guy that installed it, didn't do it right - could've sworn I did . . . Thanks for the info - any bits & pieces is great to know, at this point. Dan …it’s great being a kid again – without the glue! ;D

That cab and train look like a great combination. After FR arives, I might give that a try myself. That is a beautiful cab, I'll have to check the ESE out. The hobo in the boxcar is pretty neat.

......Those are the exact sounds I'm using. They are very good - accurate or not, they illustrate loud and clear the power of those big locomotives - to me anyway! And to me, Dan. There are so many sounds that a steam loco emits........not just all the various noises made by steam - which Kuju seemed to think amounted to about three! - but the vast number of mechanical sounds. A loco in motion is like an orchestra, there are so many individual noises. Do you remember the "wall of sound" technique used by record producer Phil Spector, in the 1960's? Well, that's what a steam engine is like! This package comes closest to that effect. I 've had the free-ware version of the Empire State Express since it was made available back around 2002. It comes with the complete passenger set as well as the loco. I think Train Artisan took it off the free-ware list around 2003. Not documented in the original as it wasn't available in any of the default stuff. I like Rollins Pass.......a great mountain route and one of the few that can legitimately run Rio Grande 'stock (I love that logo and the orange/black livery ). Bruce

TA's freeware USRA Lt Mountain Loco Pack has a very similar (if not the same) cab. Aaah! That's good to know, Kevin. They do a nice cab and even some five years on it's still good. Bruce
