For some time I have been planning to do a flight of of the Congo River. Finely being able to enjoy flying again after a month of gout, I thought that this would be a good time to start this project. Also I thought I'd cover this flight here in the adventure forum so that others could enjoy following my progress or even fly along if they wish.
Originally I had planned to do this flight in Xplane using Heinz Dziurowitz's beautiful Ford Tri-Motor. However, I had been waiting for the team that does the Tree Overlays for Xplane to do Africa. As they haven't gotten around to Africa yet, I have decided that a different simulator might better suit my needs for this flight. After comparing FS9, GW3 and FSX, I have decided on FSX for the flight as in my opinion it best creates the feel of the area.
I had a bit of a struggle on deciding the plane for this flight. As I am going to simulate the late forties for this flight, I wanted a plane that was in existence during this time. Since I would be flying in FSX, I also wanted it to be a 100% FSX model for good frame rates. In the end, I decided that that it has been some time since I have flown a flight adventure with my personal favorite plane, the Grumman G21 Goose, and since there was already a nice one included with FSX, that I would use this plane for my flight. I felt this plane would be nicely suited for such an adventure and also provide some cargo space for food and extra fuel.
Since I want to simulate late forties era flying, I will be mostly navigating this flight by dead reckoning and pilotage. When available, I will also allow myself to use ADF to simulate RDF. My flight will start from the town of Soyo at the river's entrance and ending at Lake Mweru. I plan to stop at towns and settlements along the way using runways where available and the river where not.
Well I hope that you will find the updates enjoyable reading. I'm off to finish preparing for the flight and will be back with a pirep on reaching my first destination of Boma.
