Looks like Spring is here. I always know they are around every year.....however, I usually can't find their nests. (smile) This year, however, the young couple built their nest out by the pool and my wife happened to see them go into one of the palms. Our two newest little Hummer's.......... (smile) Enjoy. (You can get an idea of just how small, as compared to my wife's hand.) Cheers,

What are they, Steve? Hummingbirds? Yes indeed Bruce.....and judging by the pieces of shells, I'd say they just hatched, most likely today. Cheers, Edit: Well....after spending a LOT of time with binoculars today.....I'm convinced the new neighbors were just born today....or at least in the last 24 hours. It will be fun to keep watch on them over the next 3 weeks. From what I've read, that is about how long they will remain around here in the nest. (smile) Hopefully I will be able to catch a few more pictures.....I might be able to get a better view from the opposite side of the tree. Stay tuned. (smile)

They're quickly outgrowing their nest, Steve! Yes they are Bruce. From what I've read, it appears that they should be flying in about 3 weeks after they are born. If I figure correctly.....that should be just about a week from now. (smile) It's hard to believe that a golf ball in front of the nest would completely hid the nest and birds. (smile) I just hope the little fella's make it okay...after listening to the weather reports tonight, I'm somewhat worried about what the next 24 hours or so might bring. The weather forecasters are calling for bad "Santa Ana" winds the next day or so. (Referred to as "Devil Winds" sometimes) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Ana_windsThat could have a terrible effect on their little nest. It was about a year ago we had one of the worst Santa Ana's I've seen since living here. Winds blew for 3 days....sometimes so hard you could hardly see the street in front of the house due to the dust. If that happens.....I'm not holding too much hope for the little ones or their home. Time will tell I suppose. Cheers,

Time will tell Steve, as you say. Hopefully they'll be OK. It's always amazing just how resilient animals and birds are and how they manage to get through severe weather events. I always think that whenever we have severe winters with snow and ice lasting for weeks on end and still they manage. Here's hoping yours will too.
Can you put anything up that might shield their nest from the direction the winds will be coming?
Roger

Can you put anything up that might shield their nest from the direction the winds will be coming? No Roger.....trust me when I tell you I've spent some time thinking about that. (smile) The winds are so strong that it would be nearly impossible to support anything big enough to protect the area. Winds are strong enough to blow over Tractor Trailers and high profile vehicles.....so really there isn't much you can do but to ride it out. On the bright side.....the winds were forecast to begin last evening, and as of 6 A.M., it's as calm as can be right now. I'm hoping it won't be as bad in this area as they were forecasting. Cheers,

Well I hope that your little visitors are okay, Steve. I just had a look at the forecast for your location and it's still for windy conditions.
I've heard of the Santa Ana winds before.....the condition is mentioned in an episode of an old radio show "Night Beat" and I'm sure it's also mentioned in the movie "Chinatown".

"Night Beat".......still one of my favorite Satellite Radio shows. A quick check of my schedule shows that it will be on again tomorrow morning at 9:30. The program listed is "Bomb Investigation" from Sept. 4, 1952. As far as the wind goes........it's been pretty calm all day. Just checked the weather for the rest of the week, and it now shows normal weather......hmmmm.......beats me, but I'm not complaining. (smile) Cheers,

"Night Beat".......still one of my favorite Satellite Radio shows..... Frank Lovejoy was the star of the American shows. Down here we also had a local (Aussie version) but of course the one I'm referring to was the US-produced show.... "Starring Frank Lovejoy as Randy Stone".Hang on a tick and I'll tell you which one mentions that wind........................

I'm wrong....it wasn't mentioned in "Nighbeat" because Randy Stone covered the nightbeat for the Chicago Star! The one I'm thinking of featured Van Helflin. I'll have to look for it. It's here somewhere.

Yep! Philip Marlow "Red Wind", 1947.
